Attractions in Penang

From UNESCO-listed streets to a glass skywalk 249 metres above the city — each attraction is independently verified with accurate hours and pricing.

George Town Street Art

George Town's street art movement began in 2012 when Lithuanian artist Ernest Zacharevic was commissioned for a public art project called "Mirrors George Town" during the George Town Festival. The most iconic pieces, including "Children on a Bicycle" and "Boy on a Motorcycle", are painted directly onto the walls of heritage shophouses along Armenian Street, Ah Quee Street, and nearby lanes. Alongside the painted murals, wrought iron rod caricatures across the heritage zone depict historical anecdotes about the streets where they stand.

Kek Lok Si Temple

Founded in 1890 by Abbot Beow Lean of Fujian province, Kek Lok Si is the largest Buddhist temple in Malaysia and one of the most important in Southeast Asia. Its architecture reflects Penang's multicultural Buddhist community, with the seven storey Pagoda of Ten Thousand Buddhas combining a Chinese base, Thai style middle tier, and Burmese crown. At the hilltop stands a 36.57 metre bronze statue of the Guan Yin Bodhisattva within a grand open pavilion.

Pinang Peranakan Mansion

Built in the late 1890s by Kapitan Cina Chung Keng Quee, the Pinang Peranakan Mansion is one of George Town's most opulent restored heritage buildings. Today it operates as a museum dedicated to Peranakan culture, a unique blend of Chinese, Malay, and European influences that shaped the Straits Chinese community. More than 1,000 antiques and artefacts are displayed across richly furnished rooms, including Scottish ironwork, English floor tiles, hand carved Chinese wooden panels, and rare porcelain.

Clan Jetties

The Clan Jetties of Penang are waterfront stilt house settlements along Weld Quay in George Town, built in the 19th century by Chinese immigrant workers. Each jetty is named after a Chinese clan, including Chew, Lim, Tan, Lee, Mixed Surname, and Koay, and remains a living residential community today. Wooden walkways extend over the water past stilt houses, clan temples, and fishing equipment, offering an intimate glimpse of historic immigrant community life.

Cheong Fatt Tze, The Blue Mansion

The Blue Mansion was built in the 1890s by Cheong Fatt Tze, a Chinese migrant who became one of the wealthiest men in the Malay Archipelago. The 38 room mansion is an internationally celebrated example of eclectic Straits Chinese architecture, combining feng shui principles with Scottish cast iron, English encaustic tiles, and Art Nouveau stained glass. After a careful restoration, it won the UNESCO Asia Pacific Heritage Award for Cultural Heritage Conservation.

Penang Hill, Bukit Bendera

Penang Hill is the highest point on Penang Island, rising 833 metres above sea level with panoramic views of George Town, the Penang Bridge, and the Strait of Malacca. Access is via a historic funicular railway that covers 1,996 metres of track in about 10 minutes. At the summit are rainforest trails, a Hindu temple, colonial era bungalows, and scenic lookout points.

Sun Yat Sen Memorial Centre

The Sun Yat Sen Memorial Centre on Armenian Street was the operational headquarters of Dr. Sun Yat Sen's revolutionary movement in Penang between 1905 and 1911. It was here that Sun Yat Sen and his followers planned and raised funds for the Guangzhou Uprising of April 1911. The restored two storey Straits Chinese shophouse now displays documents, photographs, and artefacts related to his Penang years and wider revolutionary work in Southeast Asia.

Komtar Walk, THE TOP

THE TOP occupies the upper floors of the Komtar skyscraper, George Town's tallest building. Its Rainbow Skywalk is a glass floored walkway on the 68th floor, 249 metres above street level, with panoramic views across the UNESCO World Heritage city and Penang Island. Other attractions include the Level 65 observatory deck, Sky Bridge, Jurassic Research Centre, Tech Dome, and boutique aquarium.

St. George's Anglican Church

St. George's Anglican Church, completed in 1818, is the oldest Anglican church in Southeast Asia and one of Malaysia's finest examples of neo classical colonial architecture. Built under Captain Robert N. Smith during the early British period in Penang, the church features a white Doric portico, domed steeple, and landscaped garden with a Francis Light memorial pavilion. It remains an active Anglican congregation within the George Town UNESCO World Heritage Zone.

ESCAPE Penang

ESCAPE Penang is a 29 acre outdoor eco theme park in Teluk Bahang, designed around low tech, nature based play across three zones. Adventureplay features ziplining, rope courses, obstacle challenges, and climbing walls, while Waterplay includes a Guinness World Record winning tube water slide, high speed slides, diving towers, and a Lazy River. The park is designed without screens or motor powered attractions, making it a full day experience centred on physical activity and nature.

Entopia by Penang Butterfly Farm

Originally established as the Penang Butterfly Farm, Entopia is now Malaysia's largest butterfly and dragonfly garden. Natureland is an outdoor garden vivarium where up to 15,000 butterflies across more than 120 species fly among waterfalls, ponds, and caves. The Cocoon adds an air conditioned indoor discovery centre with interactive exhibits on insects, reptiles, and invertebrates.

Batu Ferringhi Beach

Batu Ferringhi is Penang Island's most popular beach, stretching along the northern coast about 11 km outside George Town. Backed by resort hotels, restaurants, and shops, the beach offers calm waters, golden sand, and water sports such as parasailing, jet skiing, and banana boat rides. The Batu Ferringhi Night Market operates nightly and is one of Penang's most visited street markets.

Tropical Spice Garden

The Tropical Spice Garden is an award winning botanical garden spanning 8 acres of secondary rainforest in Teluk Bahang. Its winding trails pass through themed garden sections featuring cardamom, turmeric, cloves, pepper, and many other culinary and medicinal plants. Audio guides are included in 7 languages, and guided walks are available on weekends.

Fort Cornwallis

Fort Cornwallis is Malaysia's largest and oldest standing fort, built on the northeastern tip of Penang Island where Captain Francis Light first established the settlement of Penang in 1786. The current star shaped masonry fort was completed in the early 19th century. Inside are historic cannons, old prison cells, barrack rooms, a small museum, an amphitheatre, and food stalls.

Frequently Asked Questions

Accurate answers for international tourists and corporate travellers planning a Penang trip.

Do I need a full day or can Penang be done as a half-day trip from KL?

Penang is approximately 3.5 hours from KL by car — a full day is the minimum to do it justice. George Town’s heritage zone alone (street art, Clan Jetties, Peranakan Mansion, Fort Cornwallis) fills a comfortable half-day on foot. Adding Kek Lok Si Temple, Penang Hill, and the Teluk Bahang attractions requires a second half-day or an overnight stay. Message MBC and we’ll structure the right itinerary for your available time.

The core George Town heritage zone — street art, Clan Jetties, Fort Cornwallis, Cheong Fatt Tze, Pinang Peranakan Mansion, and St. George’s Church — is entirely walkable and is best explored on foot. Penang Hill, Kek Lok Si Temple, Batu Ferringhi, ESCAPE, Entopia, and the Tropical Spice Garden require a car, taxi, or Grab to reach.

Yes — the two are approximately 5 minutes apart by car in the Air Itam area, making them a natural morning pairing. Both are best visited early before the midday heat and weekend crowds build. MBC commonly combines both in a single morning session as part of a full-day Penang itinerary.

Yes — guided tours run only twice daily (11 am and 3:30 pm) and are capped at 24 visitors per session. Walk-ins are subject to availability. Advance booking is strongly recommended, especially on weekends and public holidays.

Yes — Batu Ferringhi is generally calm and suitable for swimming, though conditions vary seasonally. The beach is at its most popular from November to March. Water sports operators are available along the shore. The Batu Ferringhi Night Market starts in the evening and is a popular complement to a beach afternoon.

Penang has two very distinct zones — the George Town heritage area and the Teluk Bahang / Batu Ferringhi northern coast — each with a full day’s worth of attractions. The right combination depends on your group’s interests and travel pace. Message MBC directly and we’ll put together the right plan for you.
